Goal setting list 2025

January is that perfect time of year to reflect and set meaningful goals for the year ahead. A practice many of us have done for as long as we can remember. What’s great about setting goals is, it gives us a chance be creative, dream and spend valuable time with ourselves—a truly incredible gift. It’s not just about creating new year’s resolutions, it is a powerful time to intentionally design a life aligned to what we value the most, to understand what and who is important to us, to dream, be creative and decide how we want to dedicate one of our most precious resources, our time.

For some of us the habit of good goal setting feels natural and effortless, for others it might seem overwhelming or unclear, particularly at certain times in life. Many of us truly want something, setting goals is a step towards committing to that vision. Success is personal and defined by each individual within the unique context of their own lives.

The goals we set for ourselves not only give us meaning and purpose, something to strive towards. They also help us to do something really important… act. Without action, dreams remain ideas. Goals enable us to decide, to start the process of selecting a course of action. As Earl Nightingale once said, “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.”

Here are six practical tips to make your goals work for you in 2025:

1.     Write them down

As Tony Robbins says “when you’re in your head, you’re dead”  This underscores the importance of committing goals to paper. When you keep goals in your head, they can be easily distorted by distractions or overthinking. Writing them down transforms your goals from intangible thoughts to tangible, actionable steps.

2.     Notice how you’re feeling

When setting goals, self-doubt or resistance may arise and you immediately want to retract your real desires. "I want this, but it’s too hard because of X." become aware of these thoughts and how you are feeling, they could stem from limiting beliefs. You could be excited by the goal but because the process is unclear you immediately feel stuck and shy away from it. By recognising them you can push through the initial discomfort and stay focused on your bigger vision.

3.     Focus on the goal not the process

At the goal setting stage, clarity on the goal, the what is more important than the how, naturally we can be problem solvers and wonder how we’ll achieve such goals. Over-focusing on the process too soon can stifle creativity and discourage action. For example, if your goal is financial freedom, think about why it matters to you—career growth, independence, or stability? Focusing solely on the “how” can limit possibilities on how to get there, so embrace the larger vision at the start.

4.     Visualise your goals

Visualisation is a powerful tool used by athletes and high performers, as mental imagery can strengthens the neural pathways needed for success. Chase Hughes also highlights in The Diary of a CEO podcast that visualisation taps into the subconscious brain more effectively than language-based affirmations. Spend time visualising your goals—it not only clarifies them but also increases your belief in achieving them.

5.     Use the SMART model

check-in on your goal setting capability, make it exceptional so you can smoothly turn your goals into clear actionable steps using the SMART framework and make real daily progress towards reaching them. This framework helps turn goals into smaller actionable steps and is pivotal in helping us set priorities as the framework ensures our goals are specific, measurable, attainable relevant and time-bound.

A Final Thought

Goal setting can be a fun and exciting process and more than just a January tradition. It’s a gift to yourself, it enables you to be the creator of your own life, define what success looks like for you on your terms. Whilst it can be tempting to rush into action as this is a key driver to success, taking time to clarify, solidify and if you feel comfortable share your goals with others can help you get valuable insights, create accountability, make better choices and ensure your actions have meaningful purpose and direction.
